In mid-2025, Kate met Margaret and two dreams crossed paths.

Kate dreamt of finding a space where her kids could thrive, where they could explore all of the fascinating details, places and intricacies of the world they inhabit while developing and building the practical, real-life skills and mindsets that would equip them with what they might need to forge their own future. Was there already a place that offered opportunities for kids to indulge their curiosity, stretch their imaginations and develop their passions? She dreamt of a multigenerational community that would nurture and nourish her children’s dreams.

Margaret had carried a dream for more than fifty years. As a young teaching student, she questioned why education could not be more expansive. Could learning be more organic and uniquely tailored to reveal and develop each child’s passion and interest? Educated in a standardised, industrial-style institution with very narrow definitions of intelligence, which, of course, was shaped by the needs of its time, she knew that a time would come when the needs of children and the world would necessitate learning grounds that sparked and nourished curiosity and individuality, as well as rich emotional and social development.

This meeting of minds ignited a rapid series of events. Curiosity ignited questions, questions became conversations and conversations drew people from many different corners. Little by little, colourful threads began finding their way towards one another.

There were threads of creativity, nature and enterprise; emotional wellbeing, practical learning and future-focused thinking. There were the bright threads of children’s ideas, the steady threads of parental love and the golden threads of wisdom carried by grandparents, Elders, mentors and community members.

Living Tapestry’s beginning was so similar to a traditional tapestry: with a loom and a collection of separate threads, some strong and steady, others bright, soft, unexpected or whimsical. The loom holds space for them all as they travel over and under one another, meeting, crossing and connecting. Slowly, row by row, colour gathers beside colour and something new begins to emerge.

No single thread can create the picture by itself. Each brings its own character and beauty, becoming part of something greater without losing what makes it unique. This is how a tapestry is woven, and how a community begins.

The threads began to merge and intersect, and Living Tapestry was born. Slowly and surely, it is growing into a living community in which everyone has something to offer and every person can flourish.

Here, children explore who they are through meaningful projects, creative expression, nature, enterprise and real-world discovery. Parents, grandparents and community members bring their passions, experience and practical skills, mentoring young people, guiding projects and helping ideas become useful, beautiful and shared.

Living Tapestry is a community woven from many kinds of contribution. Adults, parents, family members, grandparents, community Elders and mentors all have a place within it, bringing their presence, experience and unique gifts. Together, they help create an environment in which children are encouraged to discover their own colours, recognise their strengths and find meaningful ways to contribute.

Living Tapestry is what can happen when two dreams meet, ignite and begin to weave together: a place where individuality and belonging can exist side by side, where ancient wisdom meets emerging possibility, and where learning becomes a shared act of imagination, connection and hope.

The first threads have been gathered and the tapestry is ready to be woven.
